Revision & Breast Symmetry

Revision and Symmetry After Reconstruction

A previous breast reconstruction may sometimes require refinement. Revision procedures can address breast shape, implant position, scars, volume differences and symmetry.

Common reasons for revision

  • Capsular contracture — hardening or distortion around an implant
  • Implant malposition, rippling or visible edges
  • Volume or shape differences between the breasts
  • Contour irregularities or firm areas within a flap
  • Wide, raised or tethered scars
  • Changes over time due to weight or ageing

Techniques used

Revision is tailored to the problem: capsule surgery and implant exchange, repositioning of the implant pocket, fat grafting for contour and soft-tissue thickness, flap reshaping or liposuction, scar revision — and, where tissue is insufficient, converting to a flap-based reconstruction.

Symmetry procedures for the other breast

Balancing the opposite breast is an integral part of reconstruction. Depending on your wishes, this may involve a breast lift, reduction or augmentation. These procedures are generally planned once the reconstructed side has settled.

Reconstruction performed elsewhere

We regularly review patients who had their initial reconstruction in another country. Operative notes, implant details and imaging help us understand what was done and plan a realistic improvement.

Breast reconstruction revision in Istanbul

Revision is often requested by patients whose first reconstruction was performed elsewhere. Operative notes, implant cards and photographs allow a realistic assessment of what can be improved before you travel to Istanbul.

Frequently asked questions

Can a reconstruction done in another country be revised?

Yes. Previous operative notes, implant cards and imaging help plan the revision. Photographs allow a first assessment before travel.

When can revision be performed?

Usually at least three to six months after the previous operation, once swelling has resolved and tissues have softened.
